Valhalla Rising
Director: Nicolas Winding Refn
Year Released: 2009
Rating: 1.0
A one-eyed slave (Mads Mikkelsen) is chained up and regularly forced to fight for his life until he finds a way to free himself (trusty arrowhead!), sets off for "The Holy Land" with a nameless boy (Maarten Stevenson) and a couple of Norsemen ... except the place they end up in is Hell. It begins promisingly enough, with copious mud and gore and the cinematography (by Morten Søborg) is definitely notable (it was shot in Scotland), but it stalls out once they get on the boat and there's less action and even fewer lines of dialogue. What John Turturro said about making Fear X applies here as well - Refn "likes to throw the script away" (what there was of it) ... and he thinks the stark imagery alone can carry the narrative (which it can't).
