Last Chants for a Slow Dance
Director: Jon Jost
Year Released: 1977

Unable (and unwilling) to find gainful employment and tired of his pregnant wife Darlene (Jessica St. John), Tom Bates (Tom Blair) sets out on the road, has a one night stand with a stranger and eventually kills a man ... because that's America, baby. Considering the miniscule budget (approximately $2k) and limited time shooting it, this could have been worse - and the crudeness lends it a 'documentary'-ish feel (you can hear the camera's motor) - but those long takes don't really build up to anything substantial, and it ends with basically a shrug. Some have compared it to a certain film by Chantal Akerman, but unlike Ms. Dielman, Tom's a repugnant and unsympathetic loon with an annoying cackle. Also, the footage of the rabbit being dismembered is totally unnecessary.
