Jumanji
Director: Joe Johnston
Year Released: 1995
Rating: 1.5
Orphaned siblings Judy (Kirsten Dunst) and Peter (Bradley Pierce), whose parents died in a car accident, move into a spacious new house with their Aunt Nora (Bebe Neuwirth) and uncover a board game in the attic called "Jumanji" that, when "played," summons a wide variety of aggressive creatures and calamities ... and they also bring back Alan Parrish (Robin Williams), who's been "trapped" in an alternative world for twenty-six years. It's strictly kids-only affair with its simple message of "face your fears" (or something to that extent), the effects haven't exactly held up decades later (which is expected), and then there's that "it was all a bad dream" ending that makes me want to slam my head against my desk. Still, Williams is lively (although it takes a half-hour into it for him to appear) and the pacing is frantic ... just don't expect to have much to think about.
