Black Rain

Detectives Nick Conklin (Michael Douglas) and Charlie Vincent (Andy García) capture Japanese counterfeiter Sato (YĆ«saku Matsuda) in New York City and are told to take him back to Osaka, but once they land he sneaks away and they have to track him down, relying on the aid of Assistant Inspector Masahiro Matsumoto (Ken Takakura) and Chicago-born nightclub entertainer Joyce (Kate Capshaw). In the beginning it's an atmospheric fish-out-of-water cop drama with Japan filled with steam and neon lights which brings to mind Scott's Blade Runner (Jan de Bont is credited as the cinematographer) before the story strains plausibility, starting with Charlie being decapitated - which is a cheap way to draw in audience sympathy - and then having Nick running amok, fighting in an active foundry and finally getting into a motorcycle chase in a field. Its reputation has improved as the years have passed (Douglas speaks of it fondly), but I think movies and shows that have been "inspired" by it, particularly Tokyo Vice (with Ansel Elgort), have done a better job keeping it grounded in "reality" ... as opposed to the macho posturing on display here.
