God Is a Bullet
Director: Nick Cassavetes
Year Released: 2023
Rating: 1.5
Satanic junkies - with Cyrus (Karl Glusman) as their leader - kill the ex-wife and kidnap the daughter (Chloe Guy) of police officer Robert Hightower (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau), so he sets out to recover her with crucial assistance from former cult member Case (Maika Monroe) and a mysterious one-armed tattoo artist known as The Ferryman (Jamie Foxx). It's adapted from a work of genre fiction by pseudonymous writer Boston Teran but seems needlessly drawn out with cringey "tough" banter and agonizing discussions about religion (not to mention much of it doesn't make sense if you apply any sort of logic) when it should have embraced its roots and tried for a trim B-movie with a solid cast. That said, the final shootout with the fully-armed devil worshippers is kind of thrilling (albeit over-the-top) and it closes out on a rather sweet note: who knew there was the possibility of a Happily Ever After amidst the rape and slaughter?
