The Lawnmower Man
Director: Brett Leonard
Year Released: 1992
Rating: 1.5
Dr. Lawrence Angelo (Pierce Brosnan) is conducting research on how to expand intelligence and experimenting with chimpanzees, but when one of them goes rogue and is killed he has to find a replacement, so he "tricks" intellectually challenged groundskeeper Jobe (Jeff Fahey) to play virtual reality games (while injected with experimental drugs) which makes him smarter ... but then he develops the ability to read minds and move objects and becomes a menace. It's named after the short story by Stephen King (collected in Night Shift, a personal favorite as a child) but has almost nothing to do with it - instead, it is a ridiculous video game movie (like 1982's Tron), interweaving now-outdated special effects with some truly iffy acting. Ironically, it "borrows" from King's first novel with a super-charged Jobe enacting his "revenge" on the locals using telekinesis and even "attacks" a gas station attendant with hoses. Curiously enough, my original "encounter" with this was by playing my friend's Sega CD version (which contained snippets from the feature) ... and I don't recall it being a much better experience.
