Girlfriends

Wedding and bar mitzvah photographer Susan (Melanie Mayron) - who dreams of her "artistic work" appearing in galleries - has her life slightly upended when her beloved roommate Anne (Anita Skinner) leaves to marry Martin (Bob Balaban) ... so she has Ceil (Amy Wright) move in, becomes smitten with a married rabbi (Eli Wallach) and starts sleeping with Eric (Christopher Guest). To its credit it does capture the seediness of NYC in the late 70's and a sense of 'being lost' ... but it's also a little rambling and the bickering (among all the characters) feels especially petty. It concludes on something of a sour note too: Anne confesses to Susan that she had an abortion because she didn't want any more children ... before telling her spouse. I'm pro-choice and believe a woman has complete autonomy over her own body, but I'd love to have been within earshot the exact moment she breaks it to him: now there's the real drama.
