Grand Theft Auto
Director: Ron Howard
Year Released: 1977
Rating: 1.5
Paula (Nancy Morgan) is in love with Sam Freeman (Howard) - even though her parents want her to marry Collins Hedgeworth (Paul Linke) - so the two of them steal her family's Rolls-Royce and take off for Las Vegas, except they find themselves being pursued by Collins, his mother Vivian (Marion Ross), the police, a persistent radio DJ and mobsters (because there's a bounty for Paula's return). Although it's a mindless Roger Corman-produced smash fest where they try to see how many vehicles they can crush up or roll around the whole time (fittingly, they wind up at a demolition derby), for Howard - in his directorial debut - it's a personal affair: his father Rance (who plays Ned) co-wrote the script with him, his brother Clint is in there, his wife Cheryl did the catering, etc. It also shows he paid close attention from his career as a child actor and can make do with a limited budget and creative restraints.
