Renfield (2023) review

Stoker reimagined ... poorly: insect connoisseur Renfield (Nicholas Hoult), "familiar" to Dracula (Nicolas Cage), takes him to New Orleans to recover from his injuries, but feels they have an unhealthy relationship and attends support meetings for codependent individuals ... and later on confronts mobster Teddy Lobo (Ben Schwartz) and befriends police officer Rebecca (Awkwafina).  It's a garish and lame-brained comedy/horror/cop drama hybrid that isn't good at any of those things, and keeping with the times there's a need to stress the importance of "therapy" to cope with abuse - The Count, when not ripping people to shreds, is also fond of gaslighting and emotional manipulation.  This is the kind of rethink of a classic tale that could have used a more fertile and ingenious approach ... although Schwartz (who provides the voice for Sonic the Hedgehog) and Cage are having a total blast.
