Curious how this never struck a chord with me (I have a thing for black humor and horror films) - I think it's because Re-Animator isn't really a 'horror film' in the traditional sense, or at least not 'horror' in that its goal is to try to scare you. In fact, what troubles me is how I think it's mocking the horror movie, turning it into a constant laugh fest where things are not permitted to be scary. Evil Dead and Dead/Alive worked as horror with elements of comedy - I laughed periodically at both but walked away horrified - this completely turned me off, and I sensed I've seen something Ed Wood might cobble together in his spare time. The mainstream clings to it as a worthwhile horror picture, but I'll stick to Fulci and Argento, where the laughs are unintentional, and they at least make a concerted effort to frighten you. Also: Jeffrey Combs is acting in a different movie than Bruce Abbott, and Bernard Herrmann's estate should sue the composer. Cheap and dirty, but not in a good way.
