Women Talking
Director: Sarah Polley
Year Released: 2022
Rating: 0.0
Mennonite women living in Bolivia - including Ona (Rooney Mara), Salome (Claire Foy), Mariche (Jessie Buckley) and Scarface Janz (Frances McDormand) - debate what to do after several of them have been sexually assaulted in the night by locals, with three choices presented to them: leave, fight or don't do a thing (out of fear of being left out of the Kingdom of Heaven). From the very beginning Polley, who adapted Miriam Toews' novel, does the movie a disservice by neglecting to provide background details to establish what is taking place, and then proceeds in on her belabored #YesAllMen diatribe, with the same tired "talking points" hammered at repeatedly. What makes it all the worse is that it's actually based on a true story and doesn't give it proper justice: between 2005 and 2009, females from the Manitoba Colony were sedated with an animal anesthetic and raped, woke up bloody and bruised and their complaints were ignored ("demons" and "ghosts" were to blame) ... but eight men were eventually caught and thankfully sent to prison. When I learn more about a situation from doing a quick Internet search, talk is cheap.
