Indecent Proposal
Director: Adrian Lyne
Year Released: 1993
Rating: 2.0
Cash-strapped couple David (Woody Harrelson) and Diana Murphy (Demi Moore) - he's an architect, she's a real estate agent - need approximately $50k to survive the recession, so they travel to Las Vegas, get lucky at first but go on a cold streak ... and then meet ultra-wealthy John Gage (Robert Redford) who makes them a deal (complete with a contract!): for one million dollars he gets to spend the night with Diana. This was a commercial success but critical flop - it "won" several Golden Raspberry Awards including Worst Picture, Screenplay and Supporting Actor for Harrelson - and Lyne's total lack of discretion and reserve doesn't help matters much (having moodily-lit sex on a pile of cash! close-ups of wedding bands and tumbling dice!). However, the main B-movie concept is kind of interesting (even though it goes exactly where you think it will) and Redford has the gravitas needed for his amoral character. At its core, it actually has a conservative message: marriages have a hard time surviving after there's an indiscretion and jealousy becomes a major problem ... and money can't buy true love.
