M3GAN

Director: Gerard Johnstone
Year Released: 2022
Rating: 2.0

Having survived a car crash that took the lives of both of her parents, Cady (Violet McGraw) goes and stays with her single aunt Gemma (Allison Williams), an engineer who's been building the Model 3 Generative Android (or M3GAN) for toy company Funki (run by comedian Ronny Chieng) - Cady forms a strong bond with the humanoid, but a growing list of dead individuals (and a dog) has Gemma worried about its capacity for evil.  The script by Akela Cooper (with assistance from director James Wan) borrows from some clear sources - including Frankenstein, Child's Play and even Ex-Machina - and doesn't provide any new ideas creatively-speaking, but the CGI isn't bad and Williams is a capable (and credible) lead.  It's interesting how the expensive doll acts as a surrogate parent and enables Cady's narcissism - I can totally see rich adults spending $10k on a robotic babysitter since many are either (a.) workaholics and/or (b.) downright neglectful as caregivers.
