Police Story 2
Director: Jackie Chan
Year Released: 1988
Rating: 1.5
As a result of the massive destruction caused (in large part) by Sergeant Chan Ka-Kui (Chan) in the first Police Story (a very expensive chandelier had to be replaced), he gets "demoted" and has to work as a traffic cop, quits the gig and tries taking his girlfriend May (Maggie Cheung) on vacation to Bali, and then is brought back because there is a group of terrorists who blew up a shopping mall. While the original from 1985 wasn't without its flaws, it was a more taut and spastic affair - this has a considerable amount of filler in it and pulls routine plot elements from other crime movies (May's kidnapped, Chan is tortured, old villains resurface etc.). As expected, there were on-set injuries for this one as well: its director/star smashed into a pane of glass and Ms. Cheung got nailed in the noggin by a falling metal frame and couldn't finish the movie. But watching Jackie effortlessly scale walls and fences is a thing of beauty: he's the Gene Kelly of Hong Kong.
