Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
Director: Rian Johnson
Year Released: 2022
Rating: 1.5
Billionaire tech CEO Miles Bron (Edward Norton) invites several of his "friends" - which include Connecticut governor Claire (Kathryn Hahn), Twitch streamer Duke (Dave Bautista), "fashionista" Birdie (Kate Hudson), researcher Lionel (Leslie Odom Jr.) and former partner Andi (Janelle Monáe) - to his private island off the coast of Greece for some "weekend fun" where he was planning on playing a game where he fakes his own death and they have to "solve the murder" ... oh, and famed detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig, still doing his Shelby Foote impersonation) just so happens to be there as well. The opening act is smooth enough, with the various personalities bouncing off each other and Norton's ringmaster guiding them along (he's a combination of Elon Musk, Steve Jobs and Jack Dorsey), until Johnson - who's clearly bastardizing Agatha Christie once again - breaks out the cheap tricks (twin sister! not really dead! a food allergy!) to attempt to "tie together" his pretty rickety project. The "key takeaway," that social media "influencers" (here called "disruptors") may be disreputable, is certainly no big surprise.
