Lou

Director: Anna Foerster
Year Released: 2022
Rating: 1.5

Wizened Lou (Allison Janney) has her suicide attempt by firearm rudely interrupted by panicked neighbor Hannah (Jurnee Smollett), who tells her that her daughter Vee (Ridley Asha Bateman) was kidnapped by her former partner Philip (Logan Marshall-Green), so the two of them set out into the woods during a rainstorm to save the child.  While it has points going for it in the Tough Grrl category - Janney just so happens to be one of the best character actresses in the world - it's still an underdeveloped B-movie premise that throws in some international intrigue (something about the Iran-Contra affair and Lou being a case officer for the Agency and abandoning her own son) to try to make sense of the situation.  I've said it before, but since the movies repeat themselves I'll have to say it again: this could have all been (hopefully) resolved through years ... and years ... okay, maybe decades of family therapy.
