The Wonder
Director: Sebastián Lelio
Year Released: 2022
Rating: 2.5
Widowed English nurse Elizabeth Wright (Florence Pugh) goes to Ireland to keep watch over Anna O'Donnell (Kíla Lord Cassidy), an eleven-year-old who apparently hasn't eaten in four months and is still "healthy" (she claims she survives on "manna from Heaven") and find out if she's a living Saint or there's some trickery involved. Criticizing ultra-religious types for their outlandish beliefs is just a little too easy when the "cure" Wright uses to "fix" Anna's "condition" is nothing more than proto-psychological hokum itself ... and, keeping with the times, most of the men in this (including the one not alive) are repulsive. However, pushing the negative aspects of this away, Lelio's calculated direction keeps it intriguing (there's even an unexpected "happy ending!") and, as with Don't Worry Darling, Ms. Pugh is out to prove she's the closest thing we have to Elizabeth Taylor.
