The Stranger
Director: Thomas M. Wright
Year Released: 2022
Rating: 1.0
A gaunt and mangy looking man using the alias Henry Peter Teague (Sean Harris) gets a job working for a "criminal organization" to do odd jobs with his partner Mark Frame (Joel Edgerton) - while all this is happening, the Australian police are investigating the 2002 murder of a 12-year-old boy. It's based on an infamous real-life incident (the abduction of Daniel Morcombe) and a book about the investigation (by Kate Kyriacou) - so there's plenty of material to work from - and yet the presentation by Wright is so horribly disorganized and abysmally written I spent part of the time wondering what was going on: it seems like it's trying to outsmart itself. The "stylistic choices" made by Wright should have also been reconsidered: there are way too many drone shots of trees and the sound design (with Harris developing tinnitus at certain moments) is pretty overbearing.
