The House of the Devil
Director: Ti West
Year Released: 2009
Rating: 2.0
Cash-strapped college student Samantha (Jocelin Donahue) - who wants to rent an apartment - accepts a job as a "babysitter" for the mysterious Mr. and Mrs. Ulman (Tom Noonan and Mary Woronov), but it's clear from the start something's not right ... and there's no baby around. I respect West's attempt to "emulate" the 80's aesthetic by shooting it in 16mm (and using the zoom lens the way they did back then not to mention getting a hold of accurate props) and avoiding "cheap tricks" horror directors use, except I feel like he spends entirely too much time trying to build tension when the situation is way too vague to be drawn into (I personally felt a growing sense of annoyance). It really lets loose at the conclusion, however: there's a virgin sacrifice, Greta Gerwig's lifeless body is on the floor (a girl just can't smoke a cigarette in peace) and a feel-bad final shot that shows how El Diablo wins in the end. Rosemary who?
