Origin story for the cult 1960's show (starring Fred Gwynne, Yvonne De Carlo and Al Lewis) shows Frankenstein-ish Herman (Jeff Daniel Phillips) being created in a lab, then he falls in love with Lily (Sheri Moon Zombie) which her father The Count (Daniel Roebuck) objects to, Herman "accidentally" sells The Count's castle (to a bitter ex-girlfriend) ... which forces them to move to 1313 Mockingbird Lane in California. I know TV junkie Rob is a massive fan of the original program (he proudly showed off his memorabilia in an episode of MTV Cribs) so his best intentions went into it, except it fails at pretty much every level: the decision to shoot it using bright neon colors and swirling camera movements is tacky enough ... and then there's the over-acting and general clunkiness all around. If I had to dig for compliments I'd say that both Roebuck and Sheri Moon aren't too bad (it might, ironically, be the latter's most restrained role to date), and it picks up a little towards the end when they're surrounded by "normal people" (for a bit of contrast). In the future, it would be wise to keep Mr. Astro-Creep as far away from the comedy genre as from tattoo removal booths and tanning beds.
