The Witches of Eastwick
Director: George Miller
Year Released: 1987
Rating: 1.0
In the fictitious town of Eastwick, Rhode Island, single ladies Alexandra (Cher), Jane (Susan Sarandon) and Sukie (Michelle Pfeiffer) "accidentally" form a coven while dreaming of their "perfect companion" and summon Daryl Van Horne (Jack Nicholson), a demonic entity who seduces all three of them ... and they can't get rid of him. The production problems with this are well-documented - producer Jon Peters was a real problem - but that doesn't excuse the abysmal adaptation of John Updike's novel by Michael Cristofer which, star power aside, has major consistency issues. It's a crude attempt to satirize the Satanic Panic of the 1980's - where, apparently, the Devil was everywhere corruptin' the kids (like me!) - but it doesn't have much to say about mass hysteria except to make Veronica Cartwright's pearl-clutching Felicia go totally bonkers (and puke up cherry pits). Jack's last meltdown in the Church is too good for this movie: I'll gladly do those twenty push-ups a day.
