Jerry and Marge Go Large
Director: David Frankel
Year Released: 2022
Rating: 1.0
Jerry Selbee (Bryan Cranston), a retired line manager for Kellogg's (and something of a numbers geek), thinks he found a way to "cheat" the WinFall lottery, so he and his wife Marge (Annette Bening) go to Massachusetts to purchase thousands of dollars' worth of tickets, start a company and convince their pals in Evart, Michigan to buy shares, and get much needed assistance from small shop owner Bill (Rainn Wilson), who's having marital problems. It's based on an article in the Huffington Post (by Jason Fagone) and while the true story is just wonderful (always stick it to The Man), this presents itself as Midwestern Schmaltz and - more or less - an extended episode of a sitcom (that is desperately lacking in laughs). To add a slight bit of "drama" (if you could even call it that) between the Boomers and the Zoomers, it brings in Tyler (Uly Schlesinger), a Harvard student, who is determined to push Jerry "out" by rigging it in his favor. But in real life, trust me: if anyone ever approaches you and tells you they have a "system" and need your cash ... run.
