Borrego

Director: Jesse Harris
Year Released: 2022
Rating: 1.0

A drug trafficker (Leynar Gomez) accidentally crash lands his plane in Borrego Springs and takes botanist Elly (Lucy Hale) - who's doing research on the area - hostage, all in order for both of them to carry the "supplies" to The Salton Sea.  The opening title card mentions the ongoing Opioid Epidemic going on in the United States - according to the Department of Health and Human Services, "more than 760,000 people have died since 1999 from a drug overdose" - but has absolutely nothing to follow up in that regard and instead is just one long saunter through some beautiful scenery without a whole lot of urgency.  It's tolerable for a COVID production - it was shot outside and with a limited cast - but it would have been nice to actually delve into the issue of why so many people are hooked on things like fentanyl and ketamine: pain management?  relief from emotional torture?  casual "experimentation" that turns into addiction? trying to escape the fact that we just might be spiritual beings having a human experience?
