I Walk Alone
Director: Byron Haskin
Year Released: 1947
Rating: 1.5
After spending fourteen years in the clink, bootlegger Frankie Madison (Burt Lancaster) pays a visit to his former "business partner" Dink Turner (Kirk Douglas) to collect the 50% he thinks he's owed, but Dink has that money all tied up in various corporate entities (it's a nice reminder that crooks always knew how to bury funds to avoid paying taxes). It's hard to find fault with the cast (Lizabeth Scott is in there as the chanteuse involved in the "love triangle"), but the script is terribly disjointed and the dialogue tries to be too cute with the "tough guy" chatter (attention screenwriters: not every line has to be a zinger). I personally find it hilarious how Frankie tells Dink he's been smoking too much and then brags how he "made it" on a carton a month: that's still six and a half drags a day.
