Deep Water

Director: Adrian Lyne
Year Released: 2022
Rating: 1.0

Wealthy computer chip designer Vic Van Allen (Ben Affleck) and his wife Melinda (Ana de Armas) are in a deeply unhealthy relationship: she openly cheats on him with a seemingly endless number of men while he watches from afar (when not tending to his pet snails).  Lyne is known for making "erotic" movies but both characters are so exhausting and irritating it's the opposite of titillating, and the biggest question of the whole production is whether or not Vic is actually murdering these lovers (which the Tracy Letts character suspects) or whether or not they just drop off "by accident" (yeah ... that's it).  Screenwriters Sam Levinson and Zach Helm - working off the novel by Patricia Highsmith - fail to transform it into anything but a broken record, but they do change the original ending to something ... considerably more sinister (and even more unhealthy).
