The Souvenir Part II
Director: Joanna Hogg
Year Released: 2021
Rating: 1.0
The follow-up to 2019's The Souvenir has film student Julie (Honor Swinton Byrne) "mourning" the death of her junkie ex-boyfriend Anthony (Tom Burke) by asking around about him, having a brief fling with an actor (Charlie Heaton, earning those red wings) and then making a film about her affair. The same complaints I had about Part I can be applied to this as well, except there's even less going on with the main "villain" gone forever: Julie isn't exactly the best detective/journalist to "learn more" about Anthony's past and Hogg seems content just letting her mope around, saying very little. Her student short may be kind of lousy in its expressionistic kind of way, but at least it tries to be something visually engaging ... and keeps the self-pity to a reasonable length.
