That Sinking Feeling

Director: Bill Forsyth
Year Released: 1979
Rating: 2.0

Broke, unemployed and lacking significant others, several young adults (Robert Buchanan, Billy Greenlees, John Hughes and John Gordon Sinclair) from the fictitious city of Glasgow conceive of a plan to ... rob a warehouse containing stainless steel sinks and sell them for cash.  For a quick and cheap debut with amateur actors, Forsyth could have done worse, but it's also a wee bit too frivolous: the "theft" requires a magical potion (that makes the person sleep for decades with aging) and two of the lads have to dress in drag to deceive a security guard (which feels like an impromptu sketch by giddy high schoolers).  One thing you can't accuse it of is not being creative, though, and I have to wonder whether or not Wes Anderson saw it before making Bottle Rocket.  Also, if you aren't Scottish don't struggle: turn on the subtitles.
