Zone 414
Director: Andrew Baird
Year Released: 2021
Rating: 1.5
Retired detective David Carmichael (Guy Pearce) is hired by wealthy manufacturer Joseph Veidt (Jonathan Aris) to go into a closed off area referred to as Zone 414 to find his missing daughter Melissa (Holly Demaine), but he requires the assistance of Jane (Matilda Lutz), a robot who may be sentient (because she sure is depressed). For being a clone of Blade Runner (and its sequel, Blade Runner 2049) it isn't too tough to sit through: the acting (with the exception of Pearce and Lutz) is iffy and the storytelling could have been improved (it really kind of drags itself around its brightly lit sets) but it doesn't look too cheap and the idea of machines becoming self-aware is interesting (at least to me). The question of whether or not it's "ethical" to take out sadomasochistic fantasies on robots is also brought up, to which I have no real response (although therapy should still exist in the future).
