Bruised

Director: Halle Berry
Year Released: 2020
Rating: 1.0

Former MMA fighter Jackie Justice (Berry), who left the UFC in disgrace, works as a cleaning lady and has difficulty paying her bills (she's also an alcoholic), but when she regains custody of her son Manny (Danny Boyd Jr.) - who was traumatized by his father being murdered - she does everything she can to get back in the ring to support him.  While it's notable for being Berry's directorial debut, it's nothing more than a glorified pity party: there is no shortage of people out there to mock and degrade her, and then she's saddled with a little boy who can't talk and messes himself ... oh, and there's also an abusive boyfriend/manager (Adan Canto) that smacks her around.  Stallone's Rocky is an obvious inspiration (hence the ending), but this mostly wallows in its own despair, briefly spring to life when Jackie gets into the octagon again ... so maybe Berry should stick to directing pure action movies?  Lastly, kudos to the makeup department, who had the difficult task of transforming one of the most beautiful women on Earth into a commoner like the rest of us.
