The Worst Person in the World

Director: Joachim Trier
Year Released: 2021
Rating: 2.5

In twelve chapters - plus a prologue and an epilogue - Trier covers the impulsive life of Julie (Renate Reinsve) as she switches from studying medicine to psychology to photography (oof!), sleeps around a bunch, dates cartoonist Aksel (Anders Danielsen Lie) ... and then cheats on him with coffee pourer Eivind (Herbert Nordrum).  There are some wonderfully conceived moments in this - most notably Chapter 2, in which time literally stops when she has a "non-cheating" tryst with Eivind - but it also humors her unrepentant "flakiness" for far too long, and then resorts to giving one of its central characters a terminal illness in order to try to "bring her down to Earth" and conclude the movie (she also conveniently has a miscarriage at just the right time since she can't make up her mind about anything).  She isn't the "worst person" around, she's just a screw-up ... and we have a lot of those these days.
