The Night House
Director: David Bruckner
Year Released: 2020
Rating: 1.5
Still distraught over her husband Owen (Evan Jonigkeit) committing suicide in a small boat by their lake house, school teacher Beth (Rebecca Hall) goes through his belongings - especially his phone - to make sense of why he would take his own life ... and it turns out, like every single man on the planet (no exceptions!), he's hiding an extremely distressing secret. It starts off normally enough like a murder mystery, but then it's unable to sort through its many ideas coherently before reaching its gloriously ridiculous third act, where Beth gets molested by the ghost of a serial killer ... or something to that effect. Toying with the audience - is this real? is it just sleep paralysis? is it the screenwriters havin' a wank? - can be tricky move: sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, and just because you have as solid an actress as Hall in there to add an air of respectability to the project doesn't mean it's as sharp as it should have been.
