The Contender

Director: Sam Newfield
Year Released: 1944
Rating: 1.0

Unable to afford his son's tuition at a military school, Gary Farrel (Buster Crabbe), who works as a truck driver, tries to get into boxing for the prize money ... and ends up being quite good in the ring, but gets distracted by both booze and jock chaser Rita (Julie Gibson).  It's fast, cheap and virtually drama-free: nothing seems to faze Gary, and even when he doesn't train or follow all the rules he still wins all of his bouts.  It isn't until the end that he receives his "comeuppance": he slaps his kid in the head ... and then suddenly becomes a terrible fighter.  But seriously: how expensive can this academy be that a heavyweight champion can't afford it?
