Vacation Friends
Director: Clay Tarver
Year Released: 2021
Rating: 1.0
Construction company owner Marcus (Lil Rel Howery) takes his fiancé Emily (Yvonne Orji) to the nation of Mexico to propose to her, but finds his vacation plans are all bungled when their room at the hotel is ruined, so there to save the day (and become life-long pals) is former Green Beret Ron (John Cena) and his girlfriend Kyla (Meredith Hagner) who are all about danger (and drugs!). Most of the jokes are duds - with the exception of a few light chuckles here and there - and it's mostly sub-sitcom level dialogue, but it is somewhat interesting that the "wild and crazy" people are the two Caucasians, while the African American couple are all prim-and-proper: it could be because Cena and his lady friend are middle class, while Marcus and his wife-to-be are upper class, but the movie doesn't have much else to offer in this regard. It's impossible for me, personally, to hate John Cena at this point: he's not above making fun of himself (or allowing others to make fun of him) and he's always enthused. Three cheers to the Doctor of Thuganomics, even if we can't always see him.
