The Last Letter From Your Lover

Director: Augustine Frizzell
Year Released: 2021
Rating: 2.0

Ellie (Felicity Jones), a journalist for the London Chronicle, looks into the life of socialite Jennifer Stirling (Shailene Woodley), who was married to closeted homosexual Laurence (Joe Alwyn) and carried on a "secret" affair with writer Anthony O'Hare (Callum Turner), and how the two of them were separated by fate (Jennifer got into a bad car accident when trying to meet up).  You can't expect too much from a dime store romance book (with all due apologies to Jojo Moyes) with its pedestrian plotting and "emotional tricks" (oh, and a "Love That Can Never Be") but both Jones and Woodley are semi-interesting heroines, and the ending is sort-of sweet if you bought into the premise from the beginning (or are quick to shed tears).  The last text from one of my exes was to instruct me to fornicate with myself ... which was considerably less poetic than I'd have liked it to be.
