Pig

Director: Michael Sarnoski
Year Released: 2021
Rating: 3.0

A mysterious outdoorsman named Rob (Nicolas Cage) who lives alone and goes out hunting for truffles with his pig one day has his beloved pet stolen by "tweakers," so he - along with his sole contact Amir (Alex Wolff) - goes to "the city" (Portland, Oregon) to find out who did it, and also try to make peace with his own past.  For a feature debut this is surprisingly assured and measured: it unfolds delicately, giving hints as to what led Cage's character to want to retreat from society (the pretentiousness, the greed, the loss of his wife) while also exploring how Amir's father Darius (Adam Arkin) is sabotaging his son's career.  It may be a little too "pat" to be truly "remarkable" - Cage is the truffle oil masking the dish's flaws - but considering the state of American independent cinema, it's miles away from most in terms of storytelling ability.
