Spiral: From the Book of Saw

Director: Darren Lynn Bousman
Year Released: 2021
Rating: 1.5

An off-shoot of the Saw horror series has Detective Banks (Chris Rock) investigating the deaths of several fellow police officers to a mysterious figure who leaves slightly cryptic audio and video recordings behind and was inspired by the late Jigsaw Killer.  It starts with a man being tortured gruesomely in a subway and then has Rock starting what sounds like part of his monologue from an upcoming comedy special before going back to the same old police procedural stuff: the "appeal" of these movies, I guess, is seeing which new clever devices the villain is going to design next, while the cops just keep chasing their own (pig) tails.  With this one, however, it seems to be trying to become more "socially aware" - Rock has spoken out against police brutality before - but it's hard to get across a serious message about integrity when there's a woman's face being melted off with hot wax.
