Deadwood: The Movie
Director: Daniel Minahan
Year Released: 2019
Rating: 3.0
With the (unexpected) cancellation of the great Deadwood after only three seasons, fans of the show were left hanging as to the ultimate fate of fast-talking pimp/businessman Al Swearengen (Ian McShane, in an iconic role), conflicted (and temperamental) Sheriff Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant), wealthy widow Alma (Molly Parker), ruthless capitalist Hearst (Gerald McRaney) etc., so this was designed to provide at least a little closure to their story (albeit over a decade later). It does a fine job showing bits of the past to "remind" viewers as to what's going on and the dialogue is just as crisp and free-flowing with profanity, proving that cursing can be an art. I'm glad Hearst finally gets his comeuppance - good ol' Calamity Jane (Robin Weigert) gets involved, too - and that some of the characters (namely Sol and Trixie) hopefully find some happiness ... although poor Alma is still left love-sick. The proper way to have brought the series to a close, in my opinion, was two more seasons ... but the damned hoopleheads messed it all up. Let's savor what we have.
