Synchronic

Director: Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead
Year Released: 2019
Rating: 2.0

Steve (Anthony Mackie) and Dennis (Jamie Dornan), both paramedics in the city of New Orleans, are dealing with personal struggles - Steve has a brain tumor, Dennis' daughter Bri (Ally Ioannides) has gone missing - all while noticing there's some strange activity going around town due to the popularity of a drug called "Synchronic" which acts (more or less) as a teleportation device ("Time is a lie").  At the very least, it tries something different (to varying success) - the concept had me intrigued for a good while, thinking about the "bigger issues" of this "strange world" (per Einstein), while it's held together by two strong leads ... but in the end, it makes less sense than it wants you to believe, and brings up an incredibly complicated issue (race relations in America) with no follow-through.  Is the present, in fact, a real miracle?  It's all we got, ain't it?
