Raya and the Last Dragon

Director: Don Hall, Carlos López Estrada, Paul Briggs and John Ripa
Year Released: 2021
Rating: 1.5

In the divided nation of Kumandra, young warrior Raya (voiced by Kelly Marie Tran) has to try to collect the bits of a broken orb that protects against malicious beings called Druun (basically purple dust clouds) that have turned people into stone (including her father) and wiped out all the dragons of the land but one, the water-elemental Sisu (Awkwafina).  The "story," which took (according to the IMDb) a total of eight people to come up with, is basically Disney just raiding its own pantry, borrowing from Mulan and Moana and adding to that some video game dynamics (Sisu looks like Sony's Spyro crossed a little with My Little Pony), with some desperate appeals for sympathy.  Despite the weak (and familiar) 'story,' at least it looks crisp, and the voice-over work (which includes Daniel Dae Kim, Izaac Wang and Benedict Wong) is stellar.
