Stromboli

Director: Roberto Rossellini
Year Released: 1949
Rating: 2.5

Ingrid Bergman gets out of a labor camp and weds a naive Italian man who takes her to an island with few inhabitants, where she feels lost and unhappy and whines to no end (the locals don't like her either). What follows is more of the same, really - the film does not feel as 'varied' as it should be (it is a tad monotonous), although Rossellini's gift as a filmmaker does shine through in parts (the picture's subtext is far better than the actual presentation). The acting, however, is the picture's major downfall, and it is undeniably atrocious (the 'actors' are mostly nonprofessionals and have real difficulty with the English language).
