A Hen in the Wind
Director: Yasujirō Ozu
Year Released: 1948
Rating: 2.5
With her husband Shuichi (Shūji Sano) off fighting a war, Tokiko (Kinuyo Tanaka) is left broke and unable to pay for their son's medical treatment, so she - in a desperation move - turns to a single night of prostitution to cover the expenses; when Shuichi returns home, she confesses what took place ... and that information (rightfully?) upsets him. Using a sick child for sympathy points is typically too easy, but the kid recovers and then it really becomes about the husband "making peace" with the transgression - he even visits the "house of pleasure" where he meets a young woman that he tries to 'save' (by getting her a job with his company). The ending, while touching, would have been much more poignant if their reconciliation didn't involve Shuichi throwing Tokiko down a flight of stairs ... and then letting her crawl back to him.
