Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy) - who has three daughters - believes, after his father King Jaffe (James Earl Jones) passes away, that he needs a male heir to the throne (it's a "law" in the nation of Zamunda) ... only to find out he does have a son named Lavelle (Jermaine Fowler) from a one night stand when he was living in Queens some thirty-odd years ago. This is another sad example of "going through the motions" (does Eddie owe a bunch in back taxes?), taking (for some) a key comedy from the '80s and then shoving it through the Socially Conscious Filter so that any and all actual "humor" gets taken out so everyone can show how "virtuous" and "upstanding" they are. The better bits from the first film - namely Murphy and best pal Arsenio Hall playing multiple roles - get brought back, but they're not as effective here; even typically hilarious Tracy Morgan fails to add any real zest.
