Sweet Thing

Director: Alexandre Rockwell
Year Released: 2020
Rating: 2.5

Youngsters Billie and Nico (Lana and Nico Rockwell, the director's children) go from living with their alcoholic father Adam (Will Patton) to staying with their alcoholic mother Eve (Karyn Parsons, their real-life Mum) to running away from both of them.  This is the kind of very low budget indie movie that was huge in the 1990's and Rockwell is lucky both of his kids are genuinely talented and at ease in front of the camera - it's a shame there are so many grotesque moments of adults-behaving-badly (Pop gets violent when drunk, Mom's boyfriend is a creep) to detract from the quieter and more pensive moments.  Being a family affair, it has this pleasantly gritty and lived-in feel to it, unlike the glossy, "refined" digitally-made movies most are putting out these days....
