Ride in the Whirlwind

Director: Monte Hellman
Year Released: 1966
Rating: 2.0

Three cowhands (Jack Nicholson, Cameron Mitchell and Tom Filer) are heading to Waco, Texas but get hunted down by vigilantes who think they're "dangerous outlaws" (which they aren't).  It's a companion piece to The Shooting - both were shot around the same time - and is the same kind of cryptic decaffeinated Western that mutes the usual intensity of shootouts and horse chases in favor of a more cynical and ponderous approach (the shots of Utah are beautiful).  The script is by Nicholson himself, and young Jack seems to have neglected adding more details in there, but based on its cult following he might have known precisely what he was doing.
