Penguin Bloom
Director: Glendyn Ivin
Year Released: 2020
Rating: 0.5
While on vacation in Thailand, Sam Bloom (Naomi Watts) - mother of three boys - falls off a balcony and loses her ability to walk, but while recovering at home a wounded magpie - that the boys name "Penguin" - becomes her spiritual guide on a path to personal enlightenment or some such nonsense. It's based on a true story so I'll give it a small amount of credit, but it's so sappy, unrealistically wholesome and poorly directed - the family bird gets attacked at the same time her mother (Jacki Weaver) pecks at her at dinner (it's the wine talking) - that it's more comical than inspirational. I can't help but think it was pitched to Lifetime and the Hallmark Channel and the producers of both said, "We love Naomi Watts, but we're going to have to pass. Thank you and please leave."
