The White Tiger
Director: Ramin Bahrani
Year Released: 2021
Rating: 0.5
Coming from a ridiculously poor background, Balram (Adarsh Gourav) goes from being fatherless (Pop dies of tuberculosis) to working for a wealthy despot as his #2 driver (driver #1 has to hide being a Muslim) and befriending his son Ashok (Rajkummar Rao) all while dreaming of becoming an "entrepreneur." From the beginning I wasn't sure how seriously I should be taking it - after all, Balram says "I know you Chinese are great lovers of freedom and individual liberty" right at the start and then proceeds to declare America is "over" (yet we're still here) - but then it asks the audience to actually identify with this repulsive, creepy bootlicker for two hours, even endorsing his murder of Ashok and stealing his money in order to start his own taxi business. I'm sorry, sir, but there is no path to "success" that I find acceptable if it involves killing and theft.
