The Midnight Sky

Director: George Clooney
Year Released: 2020
Rating: 1.5

Something catastrophic has happened to Planet Earth (... again) and radiation is everywhere, so terminally-ill Dr. Lofthouse (Clooney) at the Barbeau Observatory has to warn the crew of the space vessel Aether (Felicity Jones, David Oyelowo, Demián Bichir, etc.) not to come back because it's dangerous ... oh, and he also has to take care of a little girl named Iris someone left behind (which people have a tendency to do now and then).  George must have had flashbacks to making Soderbergh's Solaris when he was filming this, but there's no sense of urgency to it and its attempts to be "philosophical" are downright banal ... plus, those flashbacks to Lofthouse's younger years are pure soap opera.  You know there's a problem when one of the characters dies after being hit by debris and it has little impact because not much is known about her ... and you don't need to be the C. Auguste Dupin to realize Lil' Iris is just in the Good Doctor's noggin'.
