Buster's Mal Heart

Director: Sarah Adina Smith
Year Released: 2017
Rating: 1.0

Nomadic mountain man Jonah (Rami Malek) is shown running from armed authorities after having broken into several houses and the movie shows, in flashback, his working as a concierge in a hotel, his meeting the "Last Free Man" (DJ Qualls) who tells him about "The Inversion" and his finding his beloved wife (Kate Lyn Sheil) and child murdered.  I'll watch anything Malek is in - including The Pacific and Mr. Robot - and while he elevates this slightly, the script is gibberish, as if director/writer Smith read a Wiki article on schizophrenia and paired that with a screening of Fight Club and this is all she could come up with (although the cinematography is quite lovely in parts).  The ultimate slap-in-the-face comes with the final shot which suggests that yes, it was all a dream ... which is pitiful and should land her in Movie Jail.  For punishment she should be forced to read the complete works of R. D. Laing ... and yes, I have pre-written the exam.
