Jungleland

Director: Max Winkler
Year Released: 2019
Rating: 2.0

In order to pay off old debts (and hopefully make some cash to start a dry cleaning business), Stanley (Charlie Hunnam) and his brother Walter (Jack O'Connell) travel to Reno, Nevada for Walter to fight in the bare-fisted Jungleland boxing competition ... and they're instructed to take a mysterious young lady named Sky (Jessica Barden) with them.  While there isn't much of anything "new" or unique about it - I sensed the influence of Gavin O'Connor's Warrior with regard to the fraternal conflict angle - and some questionable plot points (fighting for a car?) it has a somber B-movie feel to it, and Hunnam's constantly upbeat (if ethically dubious) character is a nice counterbalance to Walter's self-doubting pugilist.  Anyone that's seen Ms. Barden in The End of the F***ing World knows those kewpie doll eyes and that droll expression can hide a world of hurt, and she's quietly strong in this.
