Kajillionaire

Director: Miranda July
Year Released: 2020
Rating: 1.0

A family of dirt-poor small-time thieves (Evan Rachel Wood as the daughter, Debra Winger and Richard Jenkins as Mom and Dad) - who live in an office that actually oozes pink foam (there's a construction plant next door) - bring in a young woman named Melanie (Gina Rodriguez) to help them with their scams, but that doesn't work out quite so well.  This is an example of July trying to be a little too quirky and failing: Jenkins and Winger are absolutely cretinous and their robbery attempts are very unimaginative, and then when July realizes she has nowhere to go with it, it becomes a tired Coming Out story to go along with the ol' I Hate My Parents and Blame Them For Everything excuse.  "Life is nothing," one character boldly declares: maybe it is if you're not trying hard enough.
